Traveling to the Wedding….
The wedding is in Springs, New
York, which is a part of the town of East
Hampton, on Long Island. Long Island is a long
(100 miles) skinny island that juts off the east side of Manhattan. East Hampton is almost
at the end of Long Island, about 100 miles away from
NYC.

Flight options for getting to New
York:
You can fly to one of the three New
York City area airports:
·
JFK and LaGuardia – these airports
are both in Queens, which is part of New
York City but located on the very western tip of Long
Island. So it is convenient
for both spending time in NYC or if you plan to just come straight out to Springs.
·
Newark
– this is only recommended if you plan on spending time in NYC. It’s quick to get to the city from Newark,
but since it’s in New Jersey (on
the opposite side of Manhattan from
Long Island,) I wouldn’t recommend flying into Newark
if your intention is to come straight out to Springs. Newark
is off the left side of the map.
Or fly to the airport on Long Island,
Islip:
·
Long Island
MacArthur Airport (also called Islip),
is located midway between NYC and East Hampton. If you want to fly on Southwest from California,
this is your airport (although most flights from CA have two stops). A few other airlines serve Islip
(Delta, American, USAirways, Continental, possibly
United) although you won’t find a direct flight from anywhere in CA on any
airline and Southwest usually has the best deals.
Getting to Springs from New
York Area:
Car
If you want to drive out, that’s great – a car will be
helpful since the site of the wedding is 10 miles from the closest town and if
you have time, you will want to explore the surrounding areas. It’s GORGEOUS out here!
Plan on it taking anywhere from 2½ to 4 hours to get from NYC and the
airports (less for Islip) depending
on the day and time. If you leave NYC in
a car anytime after 1pm on Friday,
count on lots of traffic. A traffic-free
trip is about 2½ hours from NYC.
·
Leave Manhattan through the Midtown Tunnel at 35th/3rd or 34th between 2nd/3rd. This puts you directly on 495 East. If you're
starting from an airport ask how to get to the Long Island Expressway (LIE), East.
·
Note: you can also take the Triborough Bridge from the Upper East Side in Manhattan to the Grand Central Parkway, and from the Grand Central you can get on
the LIE going East. (Follow signs for Eastern Long Island.)
·
Take the LIE (495 East) to Exit 70 (Manorville). This is very roughly
55 miles. Go right at the off-ramp.
·
Travel 4 or 5 miles to the end, where you have no choice but to go left
for Rt. 27 (toward Montauk) continue in same direction on Sunrise Highway.
·
Continue about 20 miles, merge onto Montauk Highway 27 East, a smaller
·
local road. Stay on 27 through Southampton, Watermill, Bridgehampton.
·
Arrive East Hampton,
turning left to stay on 27 (onto Main Street). You
pass the swan pond, a windmill, and the Main Street shopping area.
·
At the main light (at Newtown Ln. in front of movie theaters) stay in the left
lane to make a slight left after the light so that the windmill is to your
right and you go under the train bridge.
·
Go through 2 lights, bear right after service station at fork onto
Springs Fireplace Road. Stay on Fireplace Road for about 7 miles.
·
Turn left on the last street before the water: Hog Creek Lane.
You'll see signs.
·
Turn right into the Barn driveway it's the first gap in the trees.
·

NB: Cars can be rented from any of the four airports.
No Car
If you don’t plan on coming out in a car, there are two
other options:
·
Hampton
Jitney – there is a bus service that travels between Manhattan
the Hamptons. It stops first at a connection point near JFK
and LaGuardia airports, and then later at a connection point near Islip
airport. It runs about once an hour,
costs about $25, and takes about 2½ hours (assuming no traffic) from Manhattan
(2 hours from the JFK/LaGuardia connection and 1½
hours from the Islip connection).
If you plan to use the airport connections, make sure you tell them when
you make your reservation – they will tell you where to have a cab drop you off
in order to meet up with the bus.
Reservations (631)283-4600 or www.hamptonjitney.com
·
Hampton
Luxury Liner – this is also a bus, but the luxury version. It doesn’t stop at the airport connections –
off peak it’s $24 and peak it’s $37. Reservations (631) 537- 5800 or
www.hamptonluxuryliner.com
·
Long Island
Railroad – you can also take a train.
It takes 2¼ - 3 hours and costs $10 or $15 depending on the train you’re on. It leaves
the city from Penn Station (34th Street/7th
Avenue) and you’ll probably be getting off at the East
Hampton station unless you’re staying in another town. You don’t need to make reservations, but
allow yourself time to arrive at the station and figure out where your train
is. Penn Station can be a madhouse –
especially if you’re on a Friday train.
Their website is http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr/html/ttn/easthamp.htm
and there you will find all the exact schedules. The train is nice because it isn’t affected
by traffic, like the Jitney sometimes is.
Beware though, it’s FREEZING – bring a sweater!
